Today’s blog comes by way of my re-birthed obsession with ponytails. Not since my soccer playing days of youth have I been this keen to whip my hair back and forth via a brilliantly executed ponytail. But alas, I find myself wanting this everyday. Everyday. Thanks to the world wide web of pinterest, there are endless varietals of the ponytail species for us to choose from, so today I’m showing you how to do three great styles you can start executing immediately.
First up, a classic slicked back pony:
Maybe you don’t have pounds of 24″ hair extensions in, or maybe you do (and I’m jealous), but either way, everyone with any length hair can recreate this look so easily. Here’s how you would this do: brush through your entire hair so it’s tangle free and smooth, add a tiny amount of pomade or gel and run through from root to tip. Use one hand to comb the hair back from the face and sides and the other to hold the combed-back hair in place on the crown of your head. Once everything is nice and tight, secure with a tight hair tie. Spray hairspray around the top to keep flyaways in place.
Next, the wrap around pony:
So maybe you got bored of a classic slicked back pony and want to up your styling game by adding in a little piece of wrapped hair around the elastic. This is so much simpler than you would ever imagine it to be. Here’s how you would do this: follow all of the same steps as above for the slicked back look. (If you are doing this as a low ponytail, as pictured above, simply gather all of the hair into one hand at the base of your neck) After you’ve secured the ponytail, take a piece of hair about 1/2″ thick from the underside of the pony and pull it towards the top, wrapping it clockwise around the base of the ponytail. Once you’ve run out of hair, simply secure it along the base (and under the ponytail) with bobby pins that match your hair. Obviously, the larger the section of hair that you start with, the larger the wrapped look will be. Spray, spray, spray that hairspray.
Last, a messy pony (aka my favorite kind):
I love this look because I love undone hair. I am so attracted to the great juxtaposition of a messy ponytail with a perfectly put together, dressed up outfit. It’s just a winning combination to me. There are numerous ways to achieve this look, first you could curl your whole head and using your fingers comb it back into a ponytail. Or you could let your hair dry (assuming you have some wave) and use a wide tooth comb to lightly comb it back before securing with a hair elastic. But if you are looking to do something really cool like the last photo pictured, here’s how you would do this: start by using a large curling iron to create loose waves in your hair. Run your fingers through the waves to loosen them up. Take a dry shampoo (I love this Oscar Blandi one) and spray around the roots. Then, take a backcomb and create volume all around the crown before you loosely, LOOSELY being the key word, pull all the hair into one hand in the middle of the back of your head and secure very tightly with a rubber hair elastic. Then, after it’s nice and tight, gently pull the hair from the elastic towards the face, loosening it up and creating a draping effect (as you see on her sides!). Finish it up by taking a tiny piece and wrapping it around the elastic, securing with bobby pins. Remember, this is no wrong way to do a messy pony tail, just do it until you’re happy with the result!
So, what do you think? Are you going to jump on this ponytail bandwagon with me or no? Which look is your favorite?
