I, for one, love a beautifully edited picture, and I know that you do too, so I’ve compiled a short list of the three best photo apps that you need to download right now to make your images look professional, well branded and beautiful. If you ever wonder how people make their pictures look so damn good, these are the apps they’re using.
1. VSCO Cam
The first place that I always start is with VSCO Cam because once you get the hang of it, there is nothing else even comparable. Because VSCO Cam also does digital editing for Lightroom and Adobe software, they know their stuff when it comes to comprehensive design and coloring, and their mobile app is no different. It’s brilliant, easy to use, responsive and fast. Honestly, no other mobile app even comes close to being able to create the beautiful images that you can make in VSCO Cam. It’s just that good.
I start by using VSCO Cam to quickly pick one of their preset color ways (generally C1 or G3) and then go in to change the levels on the rest of the image. I start with the temperature, just to see if I want things to feel warmer or cooler, and then change the fade, saturation and contrast levels. I’ll also mess around with the exposure and the sharpen tabs, just to see if I like anything it can give me.
Once you learn the levels and presets that you like, it will take you less than a minute or two to take a normal picture and give it a perfectly finished look.
Tip: if you take a picture that’s way too dark, upload it to VSCO cam and play around with the exposure and temperature levels. I’ve saved many a night-out picture this way.
I love this app for a lot of reasons, but mostly because it is great to use for when you want to do a cool image crop or if you want to upload an entire image to Instagram without having to crop any part out.
Afterlight also has amazing filters, although less customizable than VSCO Cam, but if you’re looking for a one stop shop for filters and crops, this is a great app for you.
3. Studio Design–
I just found this app a few weeks ago while looking for anything to entertain me on a 5 hour bus back to DC and was immediately enraptured in hours of endless photo editing fun. This app is beautiful and extremely well designed. I don’t use Studio to edit filters on photos, but if I’m looking to do something cool with words or shapes, this is my go-to.
If you by chance got sucked up in the Beautiful Mess app a couple of months ago, you’ll know that two of the biggest pains with the app were that 1. everything was an in-app purchase and 2. once you added a layer and then added another one, you couldn’t go back and edit the original layer, you just had to start over. Studio fixes all of that. If you come from a photoshop background, you will be in heaven with the fact that every layer can be hidden, adjusted, duplicated or deleted with one simple swipe. There’s even a special feature that I think is brilliant, but first let me show you what the app looks like:
As you can see, this app is awesome. It’s super responsive, really quick and so far I haven’t encountered a single bug. Play around with it and you’ll get lost for hours. But, here’s one of the coolest parts of this app: their remix feature.
You can view anyone’s app designs, granted they haven’t chosen to be private, select their photo and “remix” it for yourself by adding in your own photo as the background, but keeping all of their preset layers and customizations.
You can also remix your own photos that you’ve previously done, so if you create something you love and want to use again, just go back to your profile and press remix and select a different background image. Man, this app is so good.
Do you have any other photo editing apps that you swear by? If so, let me know in the comments below and I’ll check them out! I’m always in the mood for a good app download.
